This is the question I get asked more than any other, and most of the time the homeowner has already been told "you need a whole new system" by someone who profits from selling one. Here's how we actually think about it.

The four things that matter

Age of the system, the refrigerant it uses, the cost of the repair versus the value of the unit, and — the one everyone forgets — whether it was installed correctly in the first place. A well-installed 12-year-old system can be worth repairing; a poorly installed 6-year-old one might not be.

A rough rule of thumb

If the repair costs more than about a third of a replacement and the system is past 10–12 years, replacement usually wins on the math. Under that, repair usually does. But it's a conversation with real numbers, not a one-size-fits-all script.
