What does SEER2 actually measure?
SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, version 2. It's the cooling output a system delivers over a typical season (measured in BTUs) divided by the electricity it uses to do it. Higher number, more cooling per dollar of power. The "2" means it's measured under an updated 2023 test procedure that better reflects real ductwork, so a unit's SEER2 number runs slightly lower than its old SEER number. Same equipment, stricter test.
When SEER2 matters for your decision
It matters when you're buying or replacing a system, not for one you already own. SEER2 drives two things: the up-front price (more efficiency costs more) and your eligibility for rebates and tax credits, which usually require a minimum efficiency tier. For heat pumps you'll also see HSPF2 (the heating-side rating), and for gas furnaces you'll see AFUE. Three different numbers for three different jobs.
Where chasing the highest number backfires
Efficiency has diminishing returns. Stepping from an entry-level system to a solid mid-tier one saves real money on a San Antonio power bill.
