Twice a Year Is the Baseline for South Texas
The standard recommendation everywhere is once a year. For South Texas, that's not enough. Your system is logging 2,000+ operating hours over a single summer.
Spring (March or April) — The big one. Clean the coils, check refrigerant, test the capacitor, inspect electrical connections, flush the condensate drain line. This prevents 95% of mid-summer breakdowns.
Fall (October or November) — Check for wear on motors, belts, and bearings after 5-6 months of heavy use.
This is exactly why our $160/year maintenance plan includes two visits. It's built for the reality of South Texas.
What Happens When You Skip Regular Service
Skipping maintenance doesn't break your AC immediately. It's more like skipping oil changes on your car. Everything seems fine until it's not.
Here's what we see when systems go 2+ years without service:
Refrigerant slowly leaks out. A system one pound low works 20% harder. Energy costs go up $40 to $60 per month.
Coils get caked with grime. Dirty coils reduce cooling capacity by 20 to 40 percent.
Drain lines clog. Water backs up and either triggers a safety shutoff or causes water damage.
Capacitors weaken. Replacement is $150 to $250, but if the compressor burns out because the capacitor couldn't deliver enough power, you're looking at $1,500 to $3,000.
What a Professional Tune-Up Actually Covers

- Capacitor and electrical testing
- Condensate drain line flush
- Thermostat calibration
- Air filter check
- Full system performance test (15-20 degree temperature split)
The whole visit takes 45 minutes to an hour.
